Field Trip to the Farm

The older kids from both the inner city dropping center, and the country side Suluta orphanage, were taken about 45 km out of town into the country for a field trip. The journey was designed to motivate the children to properly care for the agricultural project that was recently undertaken on site in Suluta. The children were to learn step by step care for the crops and the chicken, and then apply it upon their return to Hope for the Hopeless.

The children visited two Christian farms in the country. One farm was primarily vegitation, while the other was primarily dairy and poultry. The children learned everything from the proper planting of seeds, all the way to how to sell the crops in the market. The typed of cow that they were introduced to on the dairy farm provided 33 liters of milk per day! The children were amazed in realizing that one of these dairy cows would provide the entire facility at Suluta with a glass of milk each day! They asked Fekadu if he could get them one of those cows, and his answer was "you must pray!"

The chicken on the poultry farm were mechanically fed which was amazing to the children. They learned how even the waste products from the cows and chickens were used fer fertilizer and for biogas production. The biogas is used in the process of milking the cows. Any vegetable "waste" was used as feed for the livestock, so in essence, the children learned that everything on a farm can be used for good purposes. There really is no waste.

As an excersion, the children visited a lake where a fish farmer used cages to trap fish. They enjoyed a lunch by the lake and then returned home. The younger children are hoping to be able to take a similar field trip soon!
